Yarkhill Church History and Information

We believe that there has been a church on this spot for more than St John the Baptist, Yarkhill looking towards the chancel800 years, although what you now see is the result of extensive renovations carried out in 1862.  Parts of the original building can be seen in the porch, and the bottom of the tower is of the same 13th century period. The Church has 3 fonts: one of dark stone with a fluted bowl is Norman and is probably from the original building, another is 13th century and a third, a fluted font, is probably 17th century. There is also a small medieval bowl for holding Holy Water known as a stoup.

Francis Stedman was the incumbent here for 47 years in the 17th Century and his son Fabian was baptised at St John the Baptist Yarkhill in 1640 Plan by Asinle & Blashill of Restoration in 1862

The Church nave was restored by the Victorians. The Tower is older and contains a ring of bells dating from the 17th Century, read more about the bells on the next page.
